star The mark of a good design house is the ease in which it acts as an extension of the in-house engineering department – DSL did this seamlessly at all stages of the work on Form Talysurf Intra. So much so that we used them for further designs embracing similar technology.

FAQ

Any shape or size you want, so long as there’s enough space for the components! Most PCBs are (yes, boring) rectangles.

But, depending on the application, many clients opt for non-square polygons, circles – or completely custom shapes to fit their enclosures.

Most PCBs you see are green, followed closely by red, black and, in the case of LED lights, typically white.

However a huge range of colours are available, including orange, purple, pink, blue – whatever you can think of.

You can even customise the colour of the ident, including the silkscreen, plus the text and logos you print on top.

Only the simplest PCBs have one layer. Most have multiple layers sandwiched together.

This is so that the tracks (how each component’s pin is connected to the next) don’t overlap.

On a complex PCB, if we only used a single layer, the PCB size would have to be huge to avoid tracks overlapping.

This depends on the board’s complexity and available surface area.

If your product needs a small board with complex components (generally those with many pins), you will need more layers.

For example, a typical processor can use over 500 pins – imagine trying to create tracks for that many pins that don’t overlap, with just a few layers to do it.

A ‘via’ is how we connect tracks on different layers of a PCB.

They may go all the way through the PCB, and connect to every layer, or they may only connect specific layers (e.g. layers 3 and 4).

A ‘blind’ via connects the internal layers of the board together but is not visible from the top or bottom layer of the PCB.

A ‘fiducial’ looks like an archery target and is used by our machinery to know the exact position of the PCB.

This allows us to expertly place electronic components to fractions of a mm accuracy.

This is where multiple PCBs are fabricated together on one PCB sheet – a process called panelization.

Unless your PCB exceeds 200 mm x 150 mm, it is far more cost-effective to use panelization and break them out individually afterwards.

If you have a smaller PCB, you can fit up to 100 of them on one panel.

A pad is a small copper area on a PCB where the pins or leads of electronic components (like resistors, capacitors, LEDs, etc.) are attached. It acts as a connection point between the component and the PCB, allowing the component to be securely soldered onto the board.

A pad is a copper area where the pin of each electronic component attaches to the PCB.
